Marine Academy to be launched in Miami in 2003

     Miami-Dade Public Schools (M-DCPS) and Shake-A-Leg Miami will partner in the establishment of a Marine Academy, a multi-faceted program that provides experiential learning for students that will lead to employment in marine related industries. The Academy's programming, developed by Dr. Jayne Greenberg, Division of Life Skills & Special Projects, M-DCPS, will offer a four year program from grades 9-12, comprised of elements including marine sciences, marine recreation, and marine vocation. Students will receive instruction in sailing, boat repair and maintenance, boat design and building, marine technology, marine mechanics, meteorology, and more.  In addition,

students will gain experience 'in the field' by working directly with employers in marine related industries. Thanks to Sen. Bill Nelson, Shake-A-Leg Miami secured a grant form the Dept. of Education to launch this project.

     Pilot programs will begin in January 2003 with Coral Gables Senior High and North Miami Beach High participating. In time, the program will be available to all Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Pilot programs are currently being held at Shake-A-Leg Miami that include boat building and dockmaster training. The objectives of the program are to increase the employability and skill competency of graduating students and increase confidence and self esteem of youth through positive learning and socialization experiences.

     Teens in the dockmaster program learn how to clean and maintain the Shake-A-Leg fleet, and have fun doing it. One of the students in the class, Jonathan, states “It’s a lot of work, but the boats look good when we’re done, and we get to learn to sail and have fun, too.” Jonathan even recruited four of his friends from school to join the program with him

     The Academy is still seeking partners to assist in its development and to provide necessary in-kind contributions.
