Boating News: Launch Ramp Misfortunes Offer Lessons Learned

BoatU.S. Trailering, the magazine for trailer boaters, has released its annual Best Launch Ramp Stories for 2003. Submitted by members of the BoatU.S. Trailering Club, the stories offer an hilarious yet insightful look into boat ramp launch foibles.

"These stories go beyond the common 'I left out the plug and the boat sunk' genre," said
BoatU.S. Trailering's Associate Publisher, Beth McCann. "And while they are very entertaining, they offer some great lessons about proper launch ramp operation."

For example, there is a story about a trailer boater at a ramp in Michigan City, Indiana, who witnessed an ill-tempered man attempting to remove his boat from the launch ramp. After making numerous tries himself and then improperly blaming his female companion for his clearly visible shortcomings in backing the trailer down the ramp, the man's companion had finally had enough. With nary a beat, she kicked him out of the driver's seat, backed the trailer down and secured the boat all in text book fashion -- and then promptly departed the launch ramp without her dumbfounded companion.

There are also tales about what happens during improper power launching, the results of draining oily bilge water on a ramp, and the one about the romantic trailer boater who found out at the launch ramp that that his date did not share his enthusiasm for trailer boating.
