Take a Class for Your Amateur Radio License:
Technician (and General?) ham theory classes will be offered
by the Waterway Radio and Cruising Club (WRCC) in Melbourne
during the week prior to the SSCA Annual Party. The courses
will be two full days and conclude with an examination for
each course. No Morse code classes will be offered. Also,
Saturday, Nov. 15, an open ham examination will be given for
all elements of all ham licenses. Those taking the classes
will have two chances to take the exam and earn a license.
If you are interested, e-mail today, without obligation, to
Ron Knaggs at n1gyx@winlink.org
or rknaggs@bellsouth.net.
Contact Ron or Phil Lowe
(Pharahps@aol.com) with any questions.
Ham Exams at SSCA Annual Party: Ham exams
will be given November 15. Exams for all classes, including
Morse Code, will be Saturday afternoon at the -Library, next
to Conchy Joes. No preregistration, just walk in at
1 pm. Bring a picture ID, pen, pencil and $12. If you are
upgrading, please also bring a copy of your license for the
examiners.
There are three classes of ham licenses beginning with Technician,
then General and finally, Extra. Each level requires an exam
with different and generally more detailed knowledge. To obtain
the General license, a five word-per-minute Morse Code exam
is also necessary. Most cruisers will want at least a General
Class license. Thus, three exams need to be taken: Code, Technician
and General. For more information, help in obtaining study
guides or assistance in getting to the exam please call Ron
Knaggs, in Ft. Pierce at (772) 429-1241 or e-mail Ron at n1gyx@winlink.org.
Ron can also be reached during the WRCC morning net on 7.268
LSB at 07:45 am Eastern time.
AirMail/WinLink Sessions: The WinLink
Development Team is pleased to announce a decision by the
SSCA Board of Directors to expand the space for the WinLink
2000 Presentations and labs. This year, ALL WinLink 2000 events
will be held in the EGCC gym, where there will be plenty of
room for everyone. In addition, the WinLink Development Team
has asked Commander Tim Rulon and Senior Marine weather forecaster
Lee Chesneau to assist by presenting several "How To"
sessions. Jim Corenman and the WinLink Development Team will
provide specific information regarding the new and expanded
position reporting system which includes MAROB volunteer weather
forecasting (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/marob.htm)
for recreational vessels worldwide. There will be many
other enhancements to discuss and learn to use. This is
the place to learn how to use WinLink 2000 with AirMail.
There will also be a complete session devoted to those who
wish to become a ham operator and enjoy the many benefits
while cruising. Please plan to attend. We promise to make
it worth the effort!
